Reconfiguration of international cooperation in Ecuador: armed conflict 2024

The internal armed conflict declared in Ecuador in January 2024 led to the partial collapse of essential services and exposed structural weaknesses in state governance. In this context, international cooperation became a key actor in institutional reconstruction, facilitating advances in health, education, water access, and social protection. This article analyzes the conflict’s impact and the response by multilateral organizations, highlighting the challenges of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in conflict zones. It emphasizes the importance of territorial approaches, inter-institutional coordination, and restorative justice. By comparing Ecuador’s situation with the Colombian post-conflict experience, it underscores the role of transitional justice mechanisms and community ownership in ensuring long-term development. The article concludes that while international cooperation is crucial, it cannot replace the need to strengthen domestic capacities and establish resilient governance frameworks. Ecuador must transform the current conflict into an opportunity for sustainable development through a coherent strategy involving both local and international actors.
